Manchester City Council has announced details of interim arrangements which will be put in place while a new permanent chief executive is recruited.
Eamonn Boylan will take up the role of interim chief executive from the end of August, supporting the council’s senior management team and ensuring a smooth transition while the process to select and appoint the new chief executive is completed.
Current CEO Joanne Roney announced last month that she will step down from the role, taking up the newly-created post of managing director at Birmingham City Council.
“Eamonn has a long and respected career in local government spanning more than 42 years, including as Chief Executive of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) – a post he held since 2017 before stepping down earlier this year,” said Manchester City Council.
“He previously held a range of senior positions including deputy Chief Executive at Manchester City Council and in Sheffield, as well as taking up roles as Chief Executive of Stockport Metropolitan Council and Deputy Chief Executive of the National Housing Agency, now Homes England.
“The process to appoint a new Chief Executive for Manchester City Council is underway.”
Boylan said: “Manchester was a happy home for me for many years and as one of the most exciting cities and local authorities in the country, it’s a proud moment to come back to my old stomping ground and help lead this wonderful city.
“Manchester and Greater Manchester have been where I’ve spent the best years of my local government career – most recently at GMCA – and given I had always envisaged continuing to be part of local government after announcing my retirement, the opportunity to take up the interim Chief Executive role in Manchester was too good to miss.”
